Is Addiction a dirty word or NOT?
Addiction:· The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or or involved in something. Habitual, psychological and physiological dependence on a substance or practice beyond one's voluntary control.
The other day I spoke at a Motorcycle Store and I met with the General Manager before the presentation. I had chatted with him prior but he was in a hurry and seemed scattered and wanted to connect when I arrived. Not soon after speaking with him did I understand specifically why he was so scattered when I called. Before speaking to a group I will get a better understanding of to whom I am speaking so that I can serve their needs, not mine. My outcome is to connect my message with the needs of whom I am speaking so I must walk a mile so to speak. To the GM I said this. “I am going to deliver a powerful 1hr presentation for your team such that they see an immediate shift in their current perspective ensuring immediate and lasting results. If you could wave a wand over your team what would your team be doing differently to drastically improve their results and therefore your bottom line?” His response was this…. “ I look at what we do here as crack addicts selling crack to other crack addicts. If I could wave a wand and shift anything about this team is to get them to be more professional and have more balance in their lives. If they could do that, the results would skyrocket faster than our fastest bike here! (Which is the new Yamaha VMax over here… Wanna test ride? ) He didn’t add the part of the VMax. So I got to thinking about the idea of Motorcycles as a drug or an addiction. Dependence, compulsion and habitual types of behavior. Then I thought of other types of addictions…. Of the top of my head I think of Love Addicts, Thrill Junkies (addict term) both of which are extreme examples to be sure. Neither of which are actual drugs we ingest as most equate to addiction. In my studies and training in Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP for short, one of the things we learn about is the idea that our neurology is affected by language and can be affected drastically. We create states of euphoria, excitement, anxiety, love, fear and a plethora of emotions or physiological states much like drugs do. That in fact they are drugs. Oxitocyn is an octapeptide hormone C 43 H 66 N 12 O 12 S 2 secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Basically it’s a drug. It’s what ensures Mothers will Love their children. In fact cocaine will block the proteins of dopamine to fill your brains synapses thereby creating a euphoria that is really created by our own bodies biochemical attributes in our neurology. Cocaine binds tightly at the dopamine transporter forming a complex that blocks the transporter's function. The dopamine transporter can no longer perform its reuptake function, and thus dopamine accumulates in the extracellular space (synaptic cleft). This results in an enhanced and prolonged post-synaptic effect of dopaminergic signalling at dopamine receptors on the receiving neuron. All of this babble just brought me in thought to this…. Are human beings simply addicts by nature? Do we have addictions as a matter of course? Again, in my trainings and in not only helping people make incredible shifts in their “addictive” behavior myself, I have witnessed others do the same countless times. I myself was addicted to cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol and cocaine and in 1 night quit them all! Just by re-organizing my internal language and therefore my behavior and my external drugs of choice no longer had any power over me and I changed my life for the better forever. I created new addictions to health, vitality and service. But I think what I am getting at is, all of these shifts, these seemingly miraculous results boil down to one thing. Shifting the Addiction! When I help a person with drugs, they decide to be addicted to the life without drugs as a healthy vibrant productive individual, a person that never picks up another drink in their life is addicted to sobriety, a person that loses their weight and exercises regularly is addicted to being fit, a person that is super successful at ANYTHING is addicted to what that success is or means to them. I hallucinate that if you give it some thought you will notice that many former drug addicts or alcoholics or food addicts become addicted to helping people get over the very same challenge. That is how it works, when I work with someone we get leverage on the addiction that is NOT Serving them and find an Addiction that is Serving them. So the question is this…. Are your addictions Serving You or are you a Servant to your addictions?
